When life throws you an actionable reminder.
Oh life, you are funny.
Just two weeks ago, I was telling two different people about how when I had two little kiddos at home (baby and toddler) and only had a couple of hours to get any work down each day I somehow got so much done.
The conversation came up due to things those people were going through in their own lives and how they wanted to work on projects but only had an hour or two a day, and not even every day.
I told them that I felt that since I didn’t have much free time, I was able to really maximize the time that I had. When I got to my free hour or two, I got right to work on my action items for the day. I didn’t dilly dally. I didn’t stop to scroll on social media. I didn’t have the space to get distracted.
Of course, I wanted more time. I felt like I didn’t have enough and yet looking back I really got so much done, with such little time. I imagined that when my girls went off to elementary school and were out of the house all day that I would be getting 5, 6, 7, 8 times the amount of work done because of the time that I had.
HA!
While yes, some days all those hours are maximized. With more time, came more distractions, more procrastination, more I’ll do that later, I’ll get back to that later. I had the luxury of time. I had so much, so of course I would get it all done, I assumed. And that was not always the case. I mean I get it done but somehow it felt easier in many ways when I had less time.
Well, the day after I had one of these conversations, at the very last minute I offered to foster two puppies for two weeks. And so I was transported back to little free time during the day because they are full on! Eating all the things, never knowing when they will poop and pee so needing to watch them 24/7 and make sure they get outside. But, I can’t turn off when they are outside either because they keep trying to eat leaves of plants that apparently can be poisonous to dogs.
