Do you have 8 minutes?
Reading this won't take 8 minutes - that question may just become your new link to support.
This short video came through my For You feed recently on TikTok (yep, I dropped off of social media but still enjoy intaking some TikTok) and I loved it immediately. It looks like it is from a podcast episode, which I haven’t listened to or watched. But, I have appreciated Simon Sinek and his work for a long time. He first became know for his TED talk, “Start with Why”.

I love this idea first of all of how we just need 8 minutes with a friend/loved one to hold space for us to make us feel better.
And then the suggestion to make that be your go to phrase/codeword when you need to vent, need to be heard, need support, etc. Do you have 8 minutes? And that the people in your life would know what that meant and know you are in need of being held.
This also reminds them that you arne’t necessarily looking for advice, or opinions, or to share your own experience with what they are going through. You don’t need them to fix you, but to hold space for you. Do you have 8 minutes tells them that they are needed as an open ear and a safe space to let it out.
I am going to start sending this clip around to friends so that it can become or own “code” and I invite you to do the same!
I also agree with Christina in this clip about how being on the receiving end of a text like that, or being able to be the person that your loved ones call to hold space for them is such an honor. I have often had friends unload on me and then apologize and I always say, please don’t apologize. I am so honored that you felt safe and supported enough with me to let it all out there.
So, please, don’t hold yourself back from opening up to your loved ones. Let yourself be heard, be seen, be held. Let yourself receive and by you opening up you are creating pathways for them to feel safe to do the same.
Here is a link to their whole episode, titled “How to be a friend.”
I lovingly challenge/nudge you to send the clip to some loved ones and to make “do you have 8 minutes?” be your new code word, too!
